Course Overview:

Finding Happines: A Multimedia Journey asks a simple but profound question: What is happiness? What does Judaism, and in particular Mussar, have to say about it? Is there a Jewish recipe for finding happiness? 

In this engaging and interactive three-session mini-course, we explore these questions using Hanan Harchol’s thought-provoking animated shorts and through interactive conversation. The course will be co-led by Hanan and TMI Mussar Group Facilitator and Past President, Gary Shaffer.

Weekly themes include:

  1. The importance of community and relationships
  2. The impact of social media on our lives
  3. Gratitude as a key to living in the present moment

Teachers:

Hanan Harchol is a New York–based filmmaker, animator, artist, educator, and classical guitarist. He is the creator of the animated series Jewish Food For Thought, funded by The Covenant Foundation, which explores Jewish ethics through conversations with his parents and is used in schools and synagogues nationwide. Harchol is also the writer, director, and producer of the feature film About a Teacher, inspired by his experiences teaching filmmaking to inner-city high school students. In addition to his visual arts work, he has performed classical guitar recitals on WQXR in New York and released eleven best-selling CDs.

Gary Shaffer is an attorney in New York who specializes in mediation. His Mussar practice routinely informs his mediation work and he has previousely preseted talks on Mussar and Mediation. He has been engaged in Mussar practice for almost 20 years and served as President of The Mussar Institute from 2012-2016.

He has facilitated a Mussar va’ad in Brooklyn for 15 years, where, among other things, he has occasionally used Hanan’s wonderful and insightful Jewish Food for Thought animations as the “source texts” for va’ad discussions.
