A Letter From Alan
Everyday Holiness by Rebbetzin Esther (Esty) Reisman

Dear Friends,

This special edition of our Yashar newsletter is given over to visioning the embryonic spiritual community that is emerging around Mussar learning and practice. My purpose is to invite your engagement (or deeper engagement) with this project, for the sake of the soul you are and for the sake of the Jewish people and the world.

Mussar offers guidance for spiritual living, and so this is an entirely appropriate time of year to take a reflective look at your life and what it needs, as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur draw near. With that in mind, this edition of Yashar also includes a wonderful article by Rebbetzin Esther Reisman that will help open your heart to preparing for the approaching Holy Days.

By Rebbetzin Esther (Esty) Reisman

“We are fortunate this month to have a column written by Everyday Holiness teacher Rebbetzin Esty Reisman. Esty writes about her experience with accounting of the soul (Cheshbon HaNefesh) which is a practice done in preparation for the High Holidays, as well as in our Mussar courses.” (Shirah Bell)

It was traumatic for me when they computerized the Brooklyn Public Library. As the organizationally challenged mother of a large family of voracious readers, I found that keeping track of borrowed library material was not an easy feat. As we struggled to gather our books for our weekly library outing, a few stragglers had invariably nestled under a mattress, behind furniture or simply slipped   onto our overflowing bookshelves. Over time, we managed to improve our record considerably, but overdue fines and missing book fees continued to be part of our lives.

With their inevitable computerization, my anxiety increased. The clerk would swipe my card and I would stand and await the verdict for a very long moment. As the titles, dates and branch names surfaced on the screen, every muscle in my body was taut with tension. If everything was in order, I would heave a sigh of relief. If not, nothing catastrophic would happen. I would pay the   fine or promise to search more diligently for the missing book.
