In This IssueWelcome In May, Alan’s new book "Everyday Holiness: The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar" hit the bookshelves. Publisher’s Weekly came out with the first review, saying that the book is “Clear and delightfully illustrated with colorful Talmudic tales...[an] engaging tome of wisdom, lore and suggested practice.” And practice is the main thing. As Alan says, Mussar isn’t just something to study; it’s something to do. With just that in mind, we are pleased to launch Everyday Holiness: the course on June 25th. This new course is a self-directed home learning program which guides you as you cultivate 13 key soul-traits that are highlighted in Alan’s book. You move through the lessons at your own pace, though we’ve built in lots of contact with others too. For more information, please read Shirah Bell’s article in this month’s newsletter, and go on our website at www.mussarinstitute.org to register. Everyday Holiness: the course is our invitation to you to enter or refresh Mussar practice, to bring wise Jewish guidance to the journey of your soul. Check out Alan’s tour schedule in the Announcements Section to see if he will soon be visiting your city! I hope you’ll enjoy this month’s newsletter, with more insightful articles to edify and inspire.
MUSSAR KALLAH V REPORT by Jeff Agron, Kallah Chair I am feeling so grateful for all of those who made the Mussar Kallah V in Miami Beach so successful. I was truly an inspiring weekend, with great learning and fellowship. Planning the Kallah was a tremendous learning experience for me. I now have a great appreciation for how much planning and hard work goes in to bringing Mussar teachers and learners together. I was struck by the depth of teaching that I witnessed and the commitment of our teachers in traveling so far to bring the world of Mussar to our world. I am humbled by the commitment of our students who traveled from places as far away as the Netherlands. Read entire article. By Rabbi Micha Berger "A light is sown for the righteous, and happiness for the straight of heart.” (Psalms 97:11) We all want happiness, so the promise of happiness sown in advance for the “straight of heart” is one that piques my interest. What does it mean to be “straight”, or in Hebrew, “yashar”? If it’s the way to get happiness, I want in. Read entire article. DWELLING IN QUESTIONS By Shirah Bell, Everyday Holiness Course Director Whether you are registered for the course Everyday Holiness or are studying Mussar in another way, I hope you have encountered many questions. “What does this word mean?” In our courses, we have provided The Forum, on-line chat sessions,
and bi-weekly conference calls as places where you can reflect, share,
and ask questions. I urge you to hold on to your questions, dwell in
them, and find treasures there. Don’t rush to find answers. Please
take seriously the process of formulating questions and seeking answers. Read

recall how they were called to school by the Principal who was aghast
at their daughter’s organization of a sit down strike in her
3rd grade classroom. Recounting the event, my mother explained that
while my father felt uncomfortable, she felt proud because I demonstrated
leadership ability. Read

book Climbing
Jacobs Ladder in the only Dutch Jewish weekly we have here
in the Netherlands. It hit me right between the eyes because I was
already searching for quite some time for a practical Jewish method
for personal growth. Read

GROW WITH THE COMMUNITY As the community of people engaged in Mussar learning and practice grows, new projects are being implemented, and we need volunteers to help us in various tasks. In every edition of the newsletter, we post a request for a volunteer of the month. If your skills meet our needs, please consider giving your time and gifts to help make Mussar more readily available to souls like you. There is no greater way to practice Mussar and to grow than to serve. AUDIO DESCRIPTIONS REQUIRED We are asking again for someone to please step forward to fulfill
this very important volunteer job. Estimated time required: approx. 8-10 hours; to be completed by July
30, 2007. Interested? This is a great learning opportunity for
you to be able to listen to all the teachings recorded thus far! Please
notify Sandy at info@mussarinstitute.org. The Mussar Institute gratefully acknowledges the following
