In This IssueWelcome The launch of Alan’s new book, Everyday Holiness, has sent him on a two month whirlwind book tour to over 27 cities, including a first visit to Australia. We hope you got a chance to hear him speak. He will tour again in September and October, so check Alan’s tour schedule and come and meet him in person. Alan’s teachings have been welcomed receptively wherever he has spoken. The Jewish world is hungry for spirituality and Mussar offers authentic Jewish teaching to guide the soul on its journey. Also just launched is Everyday Holiness: the course as the companion to Alan’s new book. Many new and prior students have already immersed themselves in this new program. We have years of experience offering Mussar training through distance learning, and use the computer to deliver material, while providing many opportunities to interact with other people to share the journey of learning and growing. In fact, if several people in a local area enroll together, we will help set up a local group, and we will provide materials to guide group meetings. Spiritual community is precious and we do what we can to facilitate and support local community to study and practice Mussar. Please visit our website for more information on this course and to register, whether as an individual or as part of a group: learning-course1.htm. All your friends at the Mussar Institute wish you well in every way.
By Alan Morinis Since the publication in May of my new book, Everyday Holiness: The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar, I have been visiting communities from New York to San Francisco, from Toronto to Sydney, Australia. I have had the good fortune to meet with thousands of people and have been given a glimpse into their spiritual lives as Jews, as well as the opportunity to explain what Mussar has to offer them. Some of you may be familiar with it from your preparation for the High Holidays, a time for reflecting on your soul traits and identifying where the repair of teshuvah is needed in your life. Those of you taking our Everyday
Holiness course will read about it in Alan’s book
and are being asked to write in your journal each night (except
Shabbat). Those of you who haven’t taken a course yet can
read about it in Alan’s book or go to the source, Cheshbon
Ha-Nefesh (Accounting of the Soul) by Rabbi Menachem Mendel
Leffin, written in 1812. Read

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. last year, the first questions that bubbles up are
how are we called to serve, whether we are pulled or pushed and in
where does that force come from. Is it a product of some egotistic
desire or is it deeper, greater and beyond the narrow realm of the
self? Read
entire article. By Sarah Armstrong My first contact with Mussar occurred when I was driving on the highway, listening to a radio interview with Alan Morinis who was talking about his book Climbing Jacob’s Ladder. Hearing that Mussar is a path of spiritual and personal development
within the Jewish tradition struck a chord in my Jewish soul. Like
many of my contemporaries, I had rejected organized religion and sought
growth in diverse teachings, models and practices. Read
