Welcome to the August edition of Yashar.  We hope you are enjoying our newsletter and benefiting from the insightful and inspirational material it contains. So much is happening that we want to tell you about.

Everyday Holiness: the course has gotten off to a wonderful start, paralleling the launch of Alan’s new book of the same title. Students from New York to Australia have enrolled in the program and the feedback has been very positive. Some are new to Mussar, while others are seasoned Mussar students who have previously completed Mussar courses. If you haven’t yet done so yourself, jump in now to experience all the interactive offerings: Mussar learning and practice, weekly teleclasses with Alan Morinis and guest teachers, forums to post opinions and questions, regular chat sessions, and more.

A note to Everyday Holiness students – remember to join the chat every Tuesday evening from 5:00-6:00 pm (Pacific time) where discussions about Mussar topics and questions about the course will be answered by Everyday Holiness Director, Shirah Bell.

Alan’s book tour has been reaching many communities and his new book, Everyday Holiness, is receiving rave reviews:

"I am someone who takes Mussar very seriously and I have never been as impressed with contemporary Mussar writings as with this book"

—Rabbi Dovid Goldman
Editor, American Jewish Spirit magazine.

Through A Mussar Lens

By Alan Morinis

We are mid-way through the month of Av and soon the month of Elul will be upon us. In the Mussar yeshivas in pre-WW II Europe, Elul was the month when all would be seized by a precious and intense fervor. Elul! Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are just around the corner. Elul! Time to prepare for those holy days, because in preparation lies the secret of success. Elul! Begin now the process of cleansing the heart that will climax in the awesome holy days ahead. Elul! Everyday Holiness: The Course

Sowing the Seeds of Questions
By Shirah Bell, Everyday Holiness Course Director

Now that the course Everyday Holiness has been running for a while, I want to share with you some early impressions. Over 50 people have begun this program in the first month that it has been offered, from Canada, the US and Australia. We hope you are among them, or soon will be, for the sake of your soul and the world. Read entire article.

A community leader

By Modya Silver
Toronto, Ontario

I was asked many years ago whether I would teach meditation and my response was “no, I've only had a daily practice for 10 years. When I get to 20 years I may feel more qualified.” And so it was, with that same type of reluctance, that I approached the Pathlighters Program offered through The Mussar Institute (TMI), with a view to becoming a teacher and facilitator of Mussar learning and practice. Facing Fear

By Genie Landon, MD
Houston, Texas

Mussar is frequently the muscle that pulls me out of the quicksand of anxiety and fear and moves me on to the terra firma of productive thought and action.  Far from being unique in this (or any other) regard, my deepest fears concern losing control to care for and protect my family.  These past few years have tested me as never before, as I dealt with the progressive mental and physical losses of my beloved father, a Holocaust survivor, who passed away so poignantly this past Yom HaShoah. VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH POSITION

Help With Hebrew

In all our courses, we refer to many middot [soul-traits]. We have had many requests to provide the Hebrew words in Hebrew. If you can wordprocess in Hebrew and could spare a bit of time to write up about 25 such terms, then that would be a great contribution to providing our students with the original Hebrew terms for the traits they are learning about and working on.
